Impact of Covid-19 Economic Support Measures on Food Insecurity in African Countries

The Covid-19 had a multidimensional impact on all countries in the world. This impact was even more apparent in terms of food insecurity, highly prevalent in African. This was mainly driven by economic, social and political factors with governments newly introduced policy responses to reduce the negative impact of the crisis on food insecurity. Thus, this study aims to assess impact of economic support measures on food insecurity in African countries. Hence, a panel data model estimated with the Poisson QuasiLikelihood method has been used on a sample of 38 countries between 2019 and 2022. Result shows that direct income support and debt relief measures reduce food insecurity confirming the efficiency of the introduced policies during the pandemic. Standard effects have also been detected for economic factors; unemployment and prices increase food insecurity while GDP per capita reduce it. Thus, to reduce the impact on food security, government policies during crisis should focus more on direct cash transfer to vulnerable categories than global macroeconomic fiscal measures
